Christmas card scenes – five winter landscapes offered at auctions ahead of the festive period

Here are five examples of scenic winter landscapes on offer at auctions on thesaleroom.com.

1. Still and snowy

A still but scenic snowy landscape by Pamela Derry (1932-2002), pictured above, is among the lots offered by Mitchells on December 9-11.

The artist, who was born in Welwyn Garden City, specialised in views of the English countryside and also published a group of greetings cards herself in later life.

The small oil on board measures 8.25 x 13in (21 x 33cm) and is estimated at £50-100.

2. Winter cottage scene

‘Horses with a log cart and cottage in winter landscape’ by Harden Sidney Melville – estimated at £200-300 at Mitchells.

This painting of horses, log carts and a warm cottage in a winter landscape is by Harden Sidney Melville (1824-1894).

The artist was born in London, the son of printmaker, draughtsman and watercolourist Henry Melville (1826-41). He became an established painter, exhibiting at in the Royal Academy’s summer show between 1837-41 before then heading to Australia in order to conduct a hydrographic survey of the north-east coast. He went on to produce a significant body of topographical works in the country.

The painting offered at Mitchells on December 9-11 is likely an earlier work depicting a classic English rustic scene. The 15.75in x 2ft 1in (40 x 63cm) signed oil on canvas is estimated at £200-300.

3. Bracing the outdoors

‘Wild fowler with dogs in winter landscape’ by George Augustus Williams – estimated at £350-450 at Keys.

George Augustus Williams (1814-1901) came from a family of well-established artists and specialised in landscapes. His prolific output included views of the Thames Valley, Kent and Wales.

He had a flair for winter scenes and moonlit landscapes which appear fairly regularly at auctions today.

An example is on offer at Keys on December 8-9 where a view of a wild fowler with dogs in a winter landscape is estimated at £350-450. The oil on canvas measures 15 x 21in (38 x 53cm) and carries the artist’s monogram.

4. Dutch landscape

A winter scene by Johannes Mauritz Jansen – estimated at £500-700 at Chiswick Auctions.

The long tradition of winter landscape painting in the Netherlands, where artists have been producing scenes of frozen lakes, skaters and snow-covered trees for centuries, means that such works are often favoured on Christmas cards.

A trademark example of a classic 19^th century Dutch winter landscape is on offer at Chiswick Auctions on December 4.

The 13.5 x 17.5in (34.5 x 44.5cm) signed oil on canvas is by Johannes Mauritz Jansen (1811-57) and shows a cottage with figures going about their business.

It is estimated at £500-700.

5. A winter walk

‘Winter Snow Scene’ by Gareth Thomas – estimated at £150-250 at Rogers Jones

For something a bit more modern, this picture from 1986 by Gareth Thomas (1955-2019) is among the lots on offer at Rogers Jones on December 5.

The signed oil on paper measures 6.5 x 9.5in (16.5 x 24cm) and is titled ‘Winter Snow Scene’ (inscribed on the back).

Depicting a snowy landscape with a figure walking, it is a vintage moody scene by the Gower-based artist whose favoured subjects were views of Wales and Provence in France.

With provenance to the Albany Gallery, this picture is estimated at £150-250.
