Second World War bomb-damaged jar

This 1950s jar is made from a piece of the Houses of Parliament damaged during air raids during the Second World War. It features a lead roundel with the crowned portcullis and is inscribed The stone came from the Houses of Parliament. The cover has a similar roundel with a rose. It is offered at Sworders’ auction of December 11 with an estimate of £200-400. The lot includes a certifying letter from HRH The Duke of Gloucester's Red Cross and St John Fund.

Representation of the People Act map

This 1831 map by James Wyld is offered with an estimate of £150-200.

The Representation of the People Act 1832 gave rise to the first general election in the UK. As well as increasing the number of individuals entitled to vote, it also disenfranchised many small towns (sometimes known as ‘rotten boroughs’) and reduced the number of MPs elected by some of the remaining boroughs.

This map by James Wyld (1812-87), made in 1831, grapples with these changes. It shows the country divided into counties with a table listing the population of various cities and includes at the bottom lists such as population of the boroughs to be disfranchised [sic] and counties which are to send one additional member each and was included in his New General Atlas of Modern Geography.

It is offered at Forum on December 6 with an estimate of £150-200. It is among several original and facsimile maps included in the lot.
