See the sights: Five pieces of travel-themed art at auction

With hundreds if not thousands of paintings offered at auctions every week on thesaleroom.com, here we pick out five works offered or sold recently that may help satisfy your wanderlust.

Shwe Dagon Pagoda painting

‘Shwe Dagon Pagoda’ by Gerald Festus Kelly – estimated at £500-800 at Lyon & Turnbull.

1. Gilded pagoda

Sir Gerald Festus Kelly (1879-1972) was a British artist but many of his most famous pictures were painted in Myanmar. He first went to the country (then known as Burma) in 1908 in order to get over an unhappy love affair. After arriving in Mandalay, his visit turned into a career-defining experience.

Among his ‘Burmese’ pictures was this small oil on board, pictured above, of Shwe Dagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in the region.

Measuring 7in x 6in (18 x 15cm), it is estimated at £500-800 at Lyon & Turnbull on February 10-11.

2. Icelandic sunset

Sunset in Iceland

‘Red Icelandic Sunset’, a limited edition print by Annie Bielecka – estimated at £70-100 at Rogers Jones.

Annie Bielecka is an artist and textile designer from Wales who creates paintings, wall hangings and costumes. Her painted output includes landscapes, seascapes, figurative subjects as well as abstracts.

An example of one her prints is offered at Rogers Jones on February 26 as part of a Modern Art charity auction to raise funds for City Hospice.

The signed limited edition printed titled Red Icelandic Sunset measures 14 x 11in (36 x 28cm) and is estimated at £70-100.

3. Chinese fireworks

Antique Chinese School painting

A 19th century Chinese School painting – estimated at £400-600 at Chorley's.

Pictures with Chinese subjects regularly appear at auctions on thesaleroom.com.

Among those consigned to sales in the early part of this year is this 19th century Chinese School painting which is offered at Chorley's on March 23-24.

Titled A Gathering, it shows a figure lighting fireworks with onlookers cheering. The oil on canvas measures 12.5 x 16in (32 x 41cm) and it is estimated at £400-600.

4. Fishing in France

French Nuns Fishing

‘French Nuns Fishing’ by Georges Ferre – estimated at £80-120 at Chorley’s.

A picture showing a group of French nuns fishing with lave nets in the sea will be offered at Chorley’s on March 23-24.

The picture is by Georges Ferre (1853-1924) and the signed oil on canvas measures 2ft 1in x 3ft 3in (64 x 99cm). It is estimated at £80-120.

5. Coastal landscape

‘Coastal landscape’ by Matthew Smith – £1275 at Chippenham Auction Rooms.

The artist Matthew Smith (1879 -1959) was a Modern British painter of still lifes, figurative works and landscapes. However, a coastal scene was among the lots that drew strong interest at Chippenham Auction Rooms on January 16.

The 21.25 x 18in (54 x 46cm) watercolour was estimated at just 30-50 but drew bidding from a number of parties before being knocked down at £1275.
