80.000 GBP
Reading , Berkshire
1917 INTERNATIONAL12-25 'Twin' Mogul 2cylinder petrol TRACTOR Serial No: F1589 The Mogul 12-25, often referred to as the 'Twin' Mogul, was introduced in 1912 with production based at International Harvester's Chicago Tractor Works. Although weighing 4½ tons, it was much lighter than the company's previous designs, and had a two-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine running at 550 rpm. Features included enclosed tinwork, an operator's cabin, a cellular radiator, sprung axles, automotive-style Ackerman steering and a two-speed transmission. Just 1,549 were built. The 'Twin' Mogul, costing £432, was the first model of the International tractor to be launched in the UK with details released to the British press in May 1915. A total of 344 were delivered to British customers between 1915 and 1920. This tractor, built in early 1917, was one of 149 supplied to the UK that year, by which time the price had risen to £550. The tractor was discovered for preservation in the 1970s in a fairly derelict state with the scrap-metal merchants, AG Evans Ltd of Wiggington, near Tring in Hertfordshire, after its whereabouts came to the attention of pioneer collector, Frank Townshend, who was following up a lead in Old Motor magazine. A Rushton was discovered in the same yard, and Frank bought both tractors. The 'Twin' Mogul presented a rather daunting proposition to bring it back to life, so, Frank eventually sold it to Rumsey brothers, farmers in the Reading area. It was from there that John Keeley acquired the tractor, and he proudly exhibited it a few times at the Knowl Hill Steam Rally. Only six original British survivors have been recorded, one of which has since been exported to Belgium, leaving just five known tractors in the UK. It is also one of only 16 recorded worldwide - making it a rare machine of great historical importance. Although much of the tinwork is missing, the tractor appears to be otherwise original and presents a challenging, but ultimately satisfying, restoration project. A very rare opportunity to acquire a 'Twin' Mogul with UK provenance.
